Hello, my name is Lewis. I am a third-year Media and Communications student at Birmingham City University. I am currently still studying, but I am also working part-time as a Marketing Executive for a group of companies, and am hoping to go full time after completing my degree.
In my three years of studying at university, my career prospects have changed greatly, as I have tried to experience as much as possible in different areas of the media. After initially signing up for a Journalism specialisation, I have decided to opt for a marketing and PR related career. Due to the nature of my course, I was able to pick modules outside of my specialisation, and as a result, I have gained knowledge and expertise in a variety of disciplines including web design and promotional culture.
My work experience placement in Summer 2019 introduced me to a career in marketing as I worked as a Marketing Assistant for several weeks. After experiencing the diverse nature of the role, with tasks ranging from blog post writing to video production, I was soon convinced it was the right job for me. And as an added bonus, I was asked if I would consider a full-time position at the company after finishing my degree. After some further correspondence, I agreed to work part-time from February 2020, going into full time upon completion of my degree.
This has given me ample opportunity to further hone and practice my skills in a real-world environment where my work will contribute towards a wider effort in support of the company. Although it might seem like throwing myself in at the deep end, I have loved every second, and am only learning more and more with each new task set for me.
Visit my website for a selection of my work from both university and commercial projects.
From my time studying I have gained experience in both print and radio journalism.
Alongside this, gained experience in PR which has helped me develop skills which enable me to better my skills as a writer and understanding of another side of journalism.
My aim is to build a career in print journalism and through this, spread awareness of those who do not have the correct representation in the mainstream British media and rectify this.
Through my time studying this I have personally made it my mission to research upon the misrepresentation of minorities in the mainstream media and through this, the premise of my work as a journalist has been through these ethics.
