Media & Communication

Personal statement

I am a motivated and enthusiastic Media and Communications student, expecting to graduate with a 2:1 BA honours degree from Birmingham City University. Looking to secure a graduate job in Post Production, ideally as a Video Editing Assistant or Post Production Runner. I have six years of editing experience, self-taught in, Sony Vegas, Final Cut and Adobe Premier as well as being a Certified Avid Media Composer User. I hope to develop my editing skills and knowledge further, while working in a fast-paced environment. My career goal is to become a TV Editor for Drama’s or a Film Editor. I want to be a part of the creative process, bringing the final product together for the screen, big or small.

My passion for TV and Film began when I started creating YouTube videos in 2012. I got into a community of aspiring filmmakers who enjoyed making short films and series with the much-loved life simulation game, The Sims. It was a game I enjoyed during my teens and became inspired by what the talented creators achieved, that I wanted to give it a try myself. I won 3 awards through the YouTube community I was a part of, 2 for short films and 1 for a series. This is what allowed me to try all areas of video production from script writing, filming and editing too, being a producer and casting director. It was a hobby I was truly passionate about, however, I hadn’t considered doing it for a living. That same year, I took GCSE Media in secondary school, and when I left, I knew I wanted to work in the media industry, so I chose to continue studying media in college and then in university. It allowed me to learn about the industry, how to do what I had already been doing, on a professional scale. I now aspire to be a part of making actual films and/or TV series. After my studies and work experience, I am still just as determined as I was when I left school, that this is the career path for me. It was only during my time in University that I realised I preferred post-production and had more skills in that area; this is why I want to become an editor.
Even so, I will continue to be a rounded creator, write scripts and continue my videography in my spare time, as I enjoy every part of the creative production process.
